Special Event on Inclusion: Insights from Research and Practice

On December 11 and 12, 2025, a special event took place as part of the master’s module “Diversity, Language, and Inclusion as Challenges for Vocational Education and Training.” Over the course of both days, distinguished guest speakers enriched the program with insightful contributions and project presentations, offering students valuable perspectives on current challenges and opportunities in inclusive education.

Professor Silvia Pool Maag presented insights into the Swiss (vocational) education system and shared research findings on the (multiple) burdens experienced by trainees during vocational training. Special educational needs can act as amplifiers of stress, particularly in the workplace-based component of training. A climate of trust between teachers and students, early follow-up by teaching staff, and the consistent use of low-threshold counseling services can help counteract these challenges and prevent training dropouts.

A particularly personal and powerful contribution was made by the educational professionals from the FAU project Inclusive Education Bavaria. Through their open and authentic accounts of experiences of inclusion and exclusion throughout their educational trajectories, they created moving, eye-opening, and thought-provoking moments. The interactive and appreciative exchange helped to reduce reservations and was perceived by participants as exceptionally enriching.

Another highlight was the guest contribution by Evelyn Schlenk on the FAU project SWING CAMPUS. Students gained insights into the culture, language, and everyday lives of deaf people and had the opportunity to learn their first signs in German Sign Language (DGS). Additional materials and professional development courses for prospective teachers are planned for 2026.

The special event was characterized by intensive impulses, meaningful encounters, and inspiring exchange. It left a lasting impression on all those involved and underscored the importance of inclusive approaches in vocational education and training. Sincere thanks go to all contributors and participants for their commitment and openness.
