Mentoring and Support for First-in-Family Students

Being the first in one’s family to attend university can be challenging. We aim to help ensure that opportunities for academic success and subsequent employment are less dependent on parents’ educational background, financial resources, and social networks. To this end, we offer a mentoring program for students who are the first in their family to study at university, who may feel that they do not fully belong in the academic environment due to language or unwritten rules, and who are seeking support and guidance with study organization, finding internships, and related topics.

We connect mentees with more experienced mentors, such as master’s students or doctoral candidates. In addition, we organize regular information sessions, exchange and networking meetings, as well as workshops on a range of relevant topics. If you are interested in receiving support as a mentee or in volunteering as a mentor, please join our StudOn group or contact us via email at wiso-bildung-gerecht@fau.de.

Further information and services related to studying as a first-generation university student can be found at ArbeiterKind.de and on the website of FAU’s Office for Gender and Equality.
